The world's first single-molecule mass measurement device was successfully developed

According to the National Science Foundation (NSF), the research team of the California Institute of Technology has completed the world's first mechanical device that can measure the mass of a single molecule.

Researchers at the school say the new technology will be used to diagnose diseases, help biologists explore the molecular mechanisms of viruses and cells, and even be used to better detect nanoparticles and air pollution. The research team includes researchers at the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience at the California Institute of Technology and the CEA Institute in France. The research and development details of this technology and CEA-LETI nano device equipment and other related content were published in the August 26 issue of Nature Nanotechnology.

This new device is not large, only a few millionths of a meter in size, and consists of a small, vibrating bridge-like structure. When a particle or molecule enters this "bridge", the oscillation frequency caused by its mass change reveals the weight of the particle. The new device is made using standard semiconductor manufacturing techniques. The cost advantages and repeatability of the process make its commercial production much more likely.
