Mouthwash is a new weapon to protect oral health in our daily lives. It can remove bad breath and keep the mouth clean. However, a recent study by the Harvard School of Public Health found that regular use of mouthwash can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Increase diabetes risk
Mouthwash is easy to use because it contains compounds that can eliminate oral bacteria that cause plaque and halitosis. However, Kaumudi Joshipura, a professor of epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, said that in the process, the sterilization of mouthwash is a thorough cleansing, and beneficial bacteria that provide nitric oxide to the body are also eliminated.
However, nitric oxide is one of the most important molecules produced by the human body and plays an important role in regulating insulin levels in the body, which has a great influence on our energy level and metabolic rate.
To confirm whether mouthwashes increase the risk of diabetes, the researchers evaluated 1206 overweight people aged 40-65 years without diabetes or any known history of coronary artery disease. 945 patients obtained complete data. Statistics showed that 43% of the participants in the study used mouthwash at least once a day, and 22% used mouthwash at least twice a day.
The study found that those who used mouthwash at least twice daily had a 55% higher risk of diabetes or diabetes during the 3-year follow-up period compared with those who seldom used mouthwash. Of this group, 30% have pre-diabetes or diabetes. The study was published in the journal "Nitric Oxide."
It is recommended to use once a day
Although both groups had a higher risk of developing pre-diabetes or diabetes, there was no correlation when the mouthwash was used less than twice a day. Researchers suspect that there is a threshold effect, that is, use of mouthwash more than twice a day will increase the risk of diabetes.
Researchers adjusted the education, income, sleep-disordered breathing, oral hygiene-related factors, fasting blood glucose, diet (processed meat, fruit and vegetable intake), attraction and obesity, and the association remained the same.
It is noteworthy that although this study pointed out that there is a correlation between the frequent use of mouthwash and the development of diabetes, this is not a causal relationship. Further research is needed to see if these findings can be replicated in larger groups.
The researchers suggest that before further data are available, it is best to limit the number of daily mouthwashes (1), especially in overweight, high-risk family history of diabetes, or elevated hemoglobin A1C (for pre-diabetes or diabetes Of the blood test).
