He pointed out: "Only reasonable use of these resources can improve the core competitiveness of microbiology, so that huge microbial resources truly become the foundation of the establishment."

Taking advantage of the comprehensive reform of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Microbiology established the Microbiology Resource Center (IMCAS-BRC) in July 2009.

"We have to find a way to establish a microbial resource function evaluation system and related teams, which can tap its potential and let these resources and bacteria come out of the refrigerator for application." Huang Li said.

Open sharing is one of the guiding principles of the center. In August 2010, the Applied Microbiology Research Network (RNAM) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was launched. The responsibility of microbes has become the general center of the network, and 23 research institutes in the Chinese Academy of Sciences and more than 100 research team leaders share and develop microbial resources.

For microbes, the microbial resource center is the upstream of the innovation value chain, laying a solid foundation for innovation at the source.

Gridded scientific research system

"Of course, to use this huge resource, we must have a strong team to study and tap the resource." Huang Li said.

Therefore, the scientific research system in the middle reaches has become a core part of the innovation value chain. Since the knowledge innovation project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was put forward, the basic research work of the Institute of Microbiology has made great progress.

These studies cover almost all disciplines in the field of microbiology, including microbial resources, microbial biotechnology and pathogenic microorganisms. Accordingly, the Institute of Microbiology has established five laboratories, including two national key laboratories and two key laboratories.

In addition, the establishment of the scientific research center has made the research atmosphere of the Institute of Microbiology increasingly stronger.

Promote the transformation of application results

As early as 1980, the "new vitamin C two-step fermentation process" invented by microorganisms was transferred to Swiss Roche company at a price of 5.5 million US dollars, which became a good story for China's technology export.

"Microbial research is naturally easily linked to applications." Huang Li said.

In recent years, many entrepreneurs have tried to develop cooperatively with the Institute of Microbiology. However, in the actual scientific research environment, the transformation of the achievements of microbiology has been hindered to some extent.

Huang Li explained that researchers are undertaking heavy scientific research tasks, and it is difficult to concentrate on completing projects for enterprises. At the same time, some researchers who are longer than basic research are lacking in application development capabilities. This prompted the Institute of Microbiology to establish the transfer and transformation center to achieve the goal of radiating research results to society.

At present, the center has introduced more than 20 applied research experts in various ways. According to reports, during the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period, the center plans to establish a research and development team of about 150 people. During the preparation stage of the technology transfer and transformation center, it made an order on the industrialization of technologies such as fermentation of long-chain dibasic acids.
