After the release of the euro, the European Central Bank found the value of euro counterfeit currency as high as 26 million euros last year. In order to deal with the falsified currency behavior, scientists at the University of Marburg in Germany developed a new process that uses a light-sensitive protein as a safe pigment for the printing of money.

This protein is derived from Halogen bacteria in seawater. Under light, the protein will change from lavender to yellow, changing the color of the light protein can also change back. Photocopying or electronically scanning counterfeit banknotes of this photosensitive protein pigment-printed currency has no such safe pigment. Under the light, all the colors of the ticket will not change, so that the genuine and fake currency will be clear at a glance. Photosensitive protein pigments can also be used for bank checks and document security.
