Gravure printing situation is good (1)

The Gravure Packaging Printing Award was established in 1999. The prospect of gravure printing is bright. In this article, Mr. TONY WHITE introduced the grand occasion of the European Gravure Association (ERA) annual meeting.
Mr. Olli Kumela, President of the European Gravure Association, warmly welcomed over 210 delegates (at least 60 in the packaging industry) who came to attend the 1998 conference in Brussels. These representatives come from more than 20 countries - including the United States, South Africa and Japan.
The schedule of the conference is very rich. Participants were invited to visit a host company (Agora printing NV, Imprimeie Helio Charleroi and Chiyoda Europa). Then use one day to speak on issues of common interest, and then use half a day to discuss issues of packaging and publications.
The chairman of the association expressed his opinion on the growing concentration of the gravure printing industry. In the United States, this process has continued for about 20 years. On the other hand, the gravure printing industry has also obtained more international investment funds for acquiring companies or replacing equipment.
The president of the association said in the report that the European gravure printing industry as a whole is in a good situation, with considerable profits, and there are reliable signs that the new investment plan is about to start. Mr. Kumela also mentioned in particular the new developments in the gravure packaging printing industry. This is evidenced by the fact that many companies recently joined the just-established packaging chapter. Steve Gooder, technical coordinator and packaging chapter, confirmed this. He also briefly introduced some positive measures being taken to continuously improve the status of gravure printing in the packaging industry.
In order to study the issues of digital proofing, roller development and water-based inks, the association has established different professional groups. In order to increase the efforts to promote the development of the gravure printing industry, we plan to establish the ERA Gravure Packaging Printing Award in 1999. In addition, the American Gravure Printing Association and the European Gravure Printing Association plan to share a showroom at this year's International Printing Exhibition.
Mr. Ed Davies, chairman of the American Printing Association, briefed the delegates on the latest developments in the gravure printing industry in the United States. In his report, he said that the market growth rate between 1996 and 1997 was 5.5%. The growth rate in 1998 is expected to be 4.9%.
In 1997, the gravure market share in the packaging industry was estimated to be approximately US$6.51 million, and it is expected to increase by US$273 million in 1998. The fastest growing markets are pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, personal care products, CD/disk packaging, candy and food.
In 1997, the packaging industry in the United States installed at least six new rooms. In 1998, about 8 more rooms were installed. Ed Davies also said that the trend of using narrow-width presses will continue, because narrow-web presses can be replaced faster (less than 1 hour), allowing gravure printing to compete with offset presses. Mr. Davies further believes that the U.S. gravure production capacity will limit the growth of the market. At present, the tobacco industry in the United States has stagnated, making it difficult for tobacco suppliers to carry out long-term packaging and ordering, which makes people doubt the future growth.
Mr. Davies concluded his speech with optimism. His final prediction is that the gravure printing industry will increase the speed of printing, the cost of roller manufacturing, and the quality of printing. Gravure printing will certainly increase its market share. Share!
Benefits of the "Euro" Dr. Peter Praet, chief economist of the Generale Bank in Brussels, gave a report entitled "What will happen to the euro?" He pointed out that in the micro-economy around the euro, transaction costs will decrease, and price transparency will increase.
The exchange rate will forever lose its dominant role, and the resulting benefits will greatly offset the initial "national uneasiness," and this unrest will manifest itself as local currencies cease to exist in 2002.
Eastern Europe is one of the fastest growing markets. Mr. Bechet Ciragan from Rentschr highlighted the great changes that have taken place in the wrap. He said that in the packaging market in Europe, tobacco packaging accounts for about 70%, new consumer goods packaging accounts for about 20%, and folding cartons (boxes) account for about 10%.
In the first phase of development, many local consumer goods manufacturing companies that were struggling to meet quality standards had closed down, even if they had once dominated the market. In the second phase of development, many of the most powerful companies were acquired by multinational companies...
Two-way evaluation Mr. Thomas Reiner, general manager of Berndt & Partner GmbH, used a comparative method to briefly introduce the development trend of the Western packaging market. He analyzed the western packaging market from the aspects of cost, benefit and environment. Mr. Reiner said that packaging must meet the above criteria, and social benefits must also be taken seriously. This includes safe production, waste disposal, production quality and environmental hygiene.
Other aspects should also be taken into account. For example, European countries must coordinate on the following issues and act in unison: observance of jointly developed standards, operational guidelines, food labeling requirements, dangerous goods transport rules, safety and health standards, and related packaging, storage and transportation Aspects of the design operation regulations.
Mr. Reinr analyzed the impact that a common environmental policy may have on the packaging industry and described the achievements of member countries.
He went on to elaborate on various factors that influence the development trend of packaging: changing consumption habits, the types of materials processed with new technologies, the pressure of new machinery and equipment on the logistics services of the packaging industry, and fully automatic production lines. All of this will have a major impact on the packaging industry. There is evidence that the cost was reduced by about 20% through improved packaging during 1984-1995.
Mr. Peiner concluded by saying that we must continue to work hard to increase the variety of colors of the packaging and make people feel dizzying. In this regard, we can demonstrate excellent packaging design concepts.
After the first day of the conference, delegates quickly arrived at the National Theatre of Belgium and enjoyed cocktails and hors d'oeuvres in the grand living room of the Golden Wall. Then they gathered at the Crown Hotel to feast together.
On the morning of the second and final day of the conference, delegates chose to attend the packaging seminars, and some participated in the publications seminar. It is gratifying that more than 60 delegates attended the packaging seminar and heard relevant statements. The first seminar was moderated by Mr. Pauline Covell, editor of Converting Today magazine. Mr. Pauline Covell presided over the strict and justified the speech time of each speaker.
Mr. Steve Gooder said that all members of the ERA are very much looking forward to taking advantage of the recent establishment of the packaging branch to make the work a good opportunity to hold professional meetings of the Association throughout Europe. The representative of the politicians suggested that the representative of the annual conference should be divided into two parts, the packaging seminar and the publications seminar, in order to better highlight the topic.
