U.S. Use Chicken Feather as Advanced Papermaking Raw Material

Scientists in the United States have studied chicken feathers that were previously used only as fertilizer and feather dusters. Now they have new and more valuable uses. Recently, a group of American scientists have developed a new technology that can turn chicken feathers into high-grade papermaking materials, and can also use chicken feathers as raw materials to produce plastic materials with high strength and low density, applied to the outer side of ships and cars. The core of this technology is: using chicken wool fiber to replace part of wood pulp in paper products, chicken hair fiber can better play the role of skeleton support. Currently in the air filter paper and decorative paper products have begun to apply. In the paper containing chicken fiber, the fiber content is 51%, and the remaining 49% is wood pulp. Therefore, the saving and environmental advantages of wood pulp raw materials are obvious: that is, less than 50% of trees can be cut. At present, the commonly used air filter paper is mainly wood pulp as raw material, but the characteristics of chicken fiber ultra-fiber make it more suitable as a raw material of air filter paper, air filter paper is also the first commercial application of processed chicken feather fiber.
It was determined that the width of the wood pulp fiber was about 10-20 microns, and the air filter paper produced from the mixed raw materials of chicken wool and wood pulp could be made only 5 microns thick, which is smaller than the width of the wood pulp fiber. Therefore, the chicken hair fiber filter paper has a smaller cavity and can filter out more pollen and spores from the air. Home and office use of this type of chicken fiber filter paper has many advantages. Its ultra-fine filter can block various types of allergens (dust) in the air on the filter paper to reduce the incidence of air pollution syndrome. In addition, if the chicken fiber filter paper is used in a vacuum cleaner, the suction effect is also better than the use of conventional filter paper.
At present, this papermaking technology has been granted a patent, and three papermaking companies have obtained production licenses, and two chicken feather fiber companies specializing in the extraction of chicken feathers have begun to operate. One of the production license companies will use chicken feather fiber to produce lightweight and dense synthetic materials for office equipment, automotive interior parts and sleeper facilities for railway passenger cars.
