Algae plastics bring new opportunities to the plastic packaging industry

At the 2012 Packaging Expo, Dordan Manufacturing presented the first thermoformed algae plastic sample from Algix. A year later, when the new packaging expo was coming, Dordan and Aglix announced the progress of the project.

Dordan marketing manager Chandler Slavin said that algae, in essence, uses PLA or PP as a base resin, acting as a bulking agent for these polymers, effectively reducing the amount of resin used in the same application.

“This technology can fundamentally change the aquaculture waste treatment industry while providing a new type of biomaterial for the plastics industry and its supply chain,” she said.

The partnership between Dordan and Algix began in 2011 with the launch of the first algae-based plastics at the 2012 Chicago Packaging Expo. The sample contained 20% algae plants, 80% PP.

Since then, Algix has long been committed to the cultivation, drying, grinding and processing of algae plants, alleviating the obstacles encountered in the process, aiming to improve the economic sustainability of this technology for commercial production.

A major problem with the first generation of algae plastics is that their color and smell are very similar to algae.

Based on this, Algix's technical director Ryan Hunt has begun to study ways to remove odors, and a series of experiments on color.

“The first generation of algae plastic smells like sea water. Algix is already developing technology to remove odors,” he said. “At this year's Packaging Expo, we will showcase the second generation. In terms of odor removal, it has made a big difference. Progress, but there is a lot of room for improvement."

At the 2013 Packaging Expo, the two companies will showcase Algix's color algae plastic thermoformed samples.

Slavin said that the diversity of colors increases the market value of algae plastics. Unlike the first generation, new products look like plastics in appearance and smell.

The successful development of algae plastics is of great significance to the sustainability of the plastics industry. For Algix, algae plastics already have commercial production conditions, but for Dordan customers, there are still some obstacles in choosing algae plastics to make new packaging. Because a new material wants to enter the market, it must first establish economies of scale. Achieving a balance between supply and demand can penetrate the market in the fierce competition.
