Nowadays, college students must have smart phones, tablets and various digital devices when they enter the campus. It is understandable that the faculty and staff on the university campus are naive in the use of these digital devices in front of these science and technology students, but is this true for students to master the technology?
The United Kingdom's Joint Information Systems Committee Educational Technology Charity is studying how best to use digital equipment to support universities. We have found that there are several common challenges in creating a correct digital learning environment on a university campus, especially since the digital skills that college students currently possess are not what universities need.
The university's lecturers told the UK's Joint Information Systems Committee Educational Technology Charity that we should not arbitrarily cut off the students' digital ability, just as we can't make a history student become a Mayan civilization expert overnight, just because of learning. In fact, a survey conducted by the author's team in 2017 showed that only 65% ​​of the 22,500 students thought they had received relevant digital training and support. Our track of student digitalization began in 2016 and a total of 74 institutions joined this year. We found that most students began to improve their digital skills by being encouraged by their tutors.
The key to creating a good digital campus is a well-trained and fully motivated faculty who can design and teach relevant technical courses at their disposal. In a university that is guided by the digital capabilities of the United Kingdom's Joint Information Systems Committee's educational technology charities, we have found that such an approach fosters a fluid digital atmosphere that gradually spreads throughout the university.
For example, Lancaster University uses a method called “dot. everything†(an online digitization service for students and faculty at Lancaster University), from student admissions, reimbursement of travel expenses, and salary management. All aspects are operated online.
In addition to nurturing employees, the university has also begun to think about how to create learning experiences and spaces that meet the needs of future students. The learning environment is not static, and digital technology is constantly evolving. Therefore, it is better to equip the original space with digital technology than to develop and develop new digital learning spaces.
At the annual “Digital Culture Festival†of the United Kingdom Information Systems Committee Educational Technology Charity, Lisi Ellis from the Open University of the United Kingdom emphasized that the future digital learning environment is a combination of space and equipment interfaces, not Simple digitalization itself.
In contrast to investing in the physical space and location, we need to invest in people who can pass digital skills to classmates and colleagues. In order to be able to build an environment suitable for digital learning, the university needs to upgrade in all aspects.
Transforming a traditional university into a smoothly functioning digital campus is a huge task. This requires a holistic and structured approach that includes the coordination and cooperation of learners, regular teams, departmental leaders, support services, school leaders, and administrators. Colleges and universities need senior members to provide strategic guidance and focus on the digitalization process of the university.
