Colombia's first 3D printed clothing

Recently, in the city of Medellin, Colombia, Veronica Betancur Fernández, a fashion design graduate student at the University of Pontificia Bolivariana, completed the production of a 3D printed garment in her graduation project. Betancur said in an interview: "The starting point of this project is to use 3D printing technology for fashion design. I am the first 3D printed commercial clothing in Colombia." It is understood that this lasted for 4 months. The project was sponsored by local 3D printing company i3D. The final 3D printed garment was finished with a MakerBot 2X 3D printer .

At the beginning of the project, Betancur tried materials such as ABS, PLA and TPU. She believes ABS is very strong, durable and easy to thermoform; PLA is a biodegradable polyester. Finally, Betancur chose FilaFlex, a flexible 3D printed wire made of TPU.
Betancur said that the design software she used was Rhino software, and that this 3D printed garment was designed on the surface of a human body's digital model. At the same time, Betancur took inspiration from nature when designing, using the beautiful pattern of brain coral as the surface pattern of the garment.
These digital design patterns are then printed in 3D and then stitched together in a 3D printed wire-like structure. Betancur used his own model to test his own designs and materials for a variety of different sizes to achieve the best quality and flexibility. In the end, the entire garment is made entirely of 3D printed materials.
Betancur hopes that this project will help people realize the possibilities of 3D printing technology in various design fields, not just fashion. In fact, she said, people can use 3D printing technology to get what they can't imagine. In the future, more and more people will use 3D printers and incorporate their own designs and ideas into the reality of 3D printing. As Betancur said: "In the future, every family will have a 3D printer, and everyone can create their own clothing."
